Kuleshov believed that the essence of the cinema was editing, the juxtaposition of one shot with another. Last week in my film studies class, I showed portions of The Cutting Edge: The Magic of Movie Editing, including a brief overview of montage theory and a recreation of the so-called Kuleshov Effect. Russian filmmaker Lev Kuleshov demonstrated this technique in the early 1900s and revolutionized cinema with some very basic editing techniques. Since 1943, Kuleshov was serving as In 1923, Sergei Eisenstein began his career in film theory, by writing 'The Montage of Attractions for LEF (Left Front of the Arts) Journal. This essay will explore these elements—including defamiliarization, creative acting, and typage—through the eyes of the Russian Formalists, focusing in particular on the works of Lev Kuleshov and Sergei Eisenstein. The Kuleshov Effect should be covered in your first semester of film study. I have learned much about writing since producing this work, but I am publishing it here despite its flaws because it will never see the light of day if I do not make it available somewhere. By 1919 Lev Kuleshov had already started to make fundamental experiments to push the use of montage, and formulated what has come to be known as the “K” effect: “From old films I took shots of the actor Mozhukhin and edited them with various other shots. To show this example, he created what has Alongside his theoretical work, Lev Kuleshov was an active director of feature-length films until 1943. The inevitable day eventually comes in film school in which one learns the famed and much-debated Kuleshov Effect.
